6 Tips Houston Movers need to know before moving

Whether you’re upsizing to a bigger home, downsizing to a smaller home or moving to a home the same size, you will soon be moving in and around the 4th largest city in the country! If you’re going to take the DIY approach or simply hire a Houston Moving Company, these next 6 tips can save you lots of Time, Energy and Money (which we can ALL benefit from saving!)

1. Get rid of the Junk!

Why would you want to pay a Houston moving company to move something that you no longer want? Try to take a weekend and go through your entire house (garage and attic included) to find the unnecessary items in your life. The less stuff you have to move, the faster and cheaper your move will be. You can also turn that clutter into some extra cash!

The easiest way to get rid of larger items is to snap a few pictures and list it on Craigslist. Now you won’t get the original value for every item, but you will be surprised how quickly some of your belongings will sell, and for a much higher price than it would have sold in a Houston Garage Sale. A couple photos with your smartphone and a post on Craigslist just helped you save money on your next move, and you didn’t even break a sweat.

The items that do not sell on Craigslist can easily be sold in a Houston Garage Sale. Now this Texas Summer heat is pretty unbearable so make sure you take precaution and stay hydrated! Check out these Garage Sale Tips 🙂

Now that we’ve gotten rid of MOST of the unnecessary items around the house, take whatever didn’t sell at the garage sale and donate it to charity. If you time it right, you could even have a charity come to your house and pick up the leftovers.

If any item in your home has been unused or unworn in the last year, then odds are you can probably get rid of it!

2. No Loose Items

If you do not follow this step, your move is guaranteed to take longer. You always want to make sure all loose items are placed in a box and taped shut. As some Houston Moving Companies do, we offer packing services for your convenience, but those services come with additional costs. The worst thing you can do is wait until moving day to start throwing all your loose items into boxes and going through all your drawers/cabinets. Save yourself the stress, money and time it will take by doing this well before the moving day.

Our Houston Movers here at B & S are skilled and trained to get all of your items out of your old home and into your new one as fast and as safe as possible. So don’t waste any more money than you have to because you will end up paying our movers to watch you finish packing. Have all your boxes of loose items taped and stacked so we can be in and out! Packing the items yourself or via packing company in advance will save you lots of money and time on moving day.

If you are choosing the DIY route, this is also a crucial step to speed up your moving day and make sure all your belongings are safe and stay in one piece. When you rent a truck, moving everything in neatly packed and taped boxes is much easier and safer than waiting until the last minute to load it all. If you hire truck loading help in Houston, they may not have the same training or certifications of larger Houston Movers, and probably won’t treat your valuables the same. This is why it’s important to make sure everything is wrapped, packed and taped before your move!

3. Use Labels on All Boxes!

Until see through boxes are invented, it is crucial for you to use labels. You don’t want to lose or misplace anything during the move and this step will ensure neither of those happen. The last thing you want to spend your money on is items that you already own. And in order to increase visibility and ensure there is no mis-labeling, label each side of the box large and bold, so it’s easy to see. If it’s small and easy to miss, you or your Houston Movers will waste valuable time trying to find the label.

Labeling is important for the loading and unloading of all your belongings. If you hire a Houston Moving Company to help you with your move then help them out by making sure they know which room is which in the new home. Another strategy to help with this is using colored stickers on the boxes and placing the same colored stickers in the doorway to the matching room. If your movers have to take the time to ask you where everything goes, this will make your move longer and more expensive.

4. Use Quality Moving Boxes

Buying more expensive boxes may seem like a strategy that won’t save you money, but buying high-quality uniform moving boxes well help you in the long run. If all the boxes are uniform and sturdy, they are easier to stack on a moving dolly and in the moving truck. If the boxes are more difficult to stack, you or your movers will have to make more trips.

Getting free boxes from friends or liquor stores seems like a way to save money on your next move, but all it takes is one faulty box for you to potentially lose item(s) more valuable than the high quality moving boxes. You can hold onto these boxes for future use, or even sell them once your move is complete.

5. Don’t Forget the Attic and Garage

As stated above, go through your ENTIRE house, including your garage and attic. It is very easy to forget about the rooms or spaces in the house that are rarely used. Try to go through these two spaces before hand and get them organized for your upcoming move.

6. Use Your Travel Luggage

Keep a couple suit cases handy to pack the essentials for your first day/night in your new home. Items like toiletries, changes of clothes, phone chargers, medicine and anything essential and/or irreplaceable for your first day/night. You don’t want to spend your first day digging through boxes just to find that one item.

Moving can be exhausting and tedious, but following these 6 simple tips can help alleviate that. There are plenty of other tips we could list to help save you time, energy and money, and if you have some let us know in a comment below or on our Facebook Page.
