Houston, Texas is one of the largest and most economically powerful cities in the United States, serving as the cultural, medical, and energy hub of the Gulf Coast region. Founded in 1836 by real estate developers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen, the city was named after Sam Houston, a key military and political leader during the Texas Revolution and the first president of the Republic of Texas.

Today, the city serves as a global commerce center, especially for the oil, natural gas, and renewable energy sectors, earning it the nickname Energy Capital of the World due to its concentration of energy corporations and engineering firms.

Houston is also internationally known for healthcare and scientific research. The Texas Medical Center is the largest medical complex in the world, containing dozens of hospitals, research institutions, and specialty treatment centers. In addition, the city plays a major role in space exploration through the Johnson Space Center, where NASA’s human spaceflight operations are managed.

Culturally, Houston is one of the most diverse cities in the United States, with thriving arts districts such as the Houston Museum District. The city is home to professional sports teams including the Houston Astros and Houston Texans.

With its strong economy, international population, world-class institutions, and growing technology and medical sectors, Houston continues to be one of the fastest-growing and most influential metropolitan areas in North America.
