OVER 50 years of serving the greater Houston area

LA PORTE

La Porte, Texas is a coastal city located in southeastern Harris County along the northwest shore of Galveston Bay, about 25 miles east of downtown Houston. With a population of roughly 35,000 residents, it is considered part of the Greater Houston metropolitan area and offers easy access to major shipping, industrial, and employment centers along the Houston Ship Channel.

Founded in 1892, La Porte originally developed as a seaside resort community, with Sylvan Beach becoming a popular destination in the early 20th century for recreation, entertainment, and big-band performances. Over time, tourism declined due to hurricanes and changing economic conditions, and the city’s economy shifted toward petrochemical manufacturing, shipping, and industry tied to the nearby Port of Houston.

The area also holds significant historical importance as the site of the nearby Battle of San Jacinto, which secured Texas’ independence from Mexico in 1836. Today, La Porte blends its coastal recreation areas and historic sites with a strong industrial base, making it both a residential community and an important part of the Houston-area energy and shipping economy.
